The purpose of the Signs of Summer campaign is to increase public awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving during a time of year when impaired crashes are especially frequent.  The campaign runs from Victoria Day Weekend until Labour Day.

The Signs of Summer campaign encourages local businesses to display a sober driving message on their outdoor marquees and in static window displays. The campaign includes anti-drinking and driving public service radio announcements, poster displays, newspaper advertisements, and "Don't Drink and Drive” bumper stickers.

In recent years posters have been placed at numerous locations throughout Durham Region, including O’Neill Collegiate (Oshawa), Durham Health Department (Ajax), Durham Regional Police Community Station (Oshawa Shopping Centre), Pickering Harbour Co. Ltd. (Pickering), and Frenchman’s Bay Yacht Club (Pickering).  Advertisements have also been placed in the Port Perry Star.

A live broadcast was heard on CKDO 1350 AM Radio.  Radio spots have also run on CJKX 95.9 FM throughout the summer and continued into the fall.  The live broadcast and radio spots were donated.

Local businesses have taken part in the marquee slogan display, including Durham Regional Police - Clarington Office (Bowmanville), Pat & Mike’s Plaza (Oshawa), Taco Bell (Oshawa), Brooklin Foodland (Brooklin), and Travelodge (Whitby).

The Blue Heron Charity Casino in Port Perry also put up a permanent sign.

Please help us increase public awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving through your participation in the Signs of Summer campaign.  While primarily a summer campaign, increasing public awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving is a year-round activity.  Contact MADD Durham for information on how you can participate.
